| biography:
| New Zealand statesman and prime minister (1990–7), born in Opunake, New Zealand. A farmer, he entered parliament in 1972 for the National Party as the member for King Country, and became Leader of the Opposition in 1986, and then prime minister. During his period in office, New Zealand changed its electoral system to one of proportional representation (1996). In 1998 he became Ambassador to the USA. |
