He studied at Columbia University, where he later became professor of literature (1892–1900), and was also appointed the first US professor of dramatic literature (1900–24). During his career he worked as an editor, essayist, drama critic, and novelist, these works being the foundation of the Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum at Columbia University. |
