| Golfer, born in Earlsferry, Fife, E Scotland, UK. He trained as a joiner, and went to work in St Andrews, the home of golf, where he became an outstanding player. He won the Open championship five times (1901–10), four News of the World matchplay championships (1903–11), and the French Championship (1910). With Harry Vardon and John Henry Taylor he formed what was known as the ‘Great Triumvirate’ of British golf in the Edwardian era. |
