| Surgeon and hypnotist, born in Rylawhouse, Fife, E Scotland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh University, and spent most of his life practising surgery in Manchester. In 1841 he attended a popular demonstration of ‘Mesmerism’ and devoted much of the rest of his working life to investigating the phenomena associated with what he himself first called neurohypnotism, later shortened to hypnotism. |
