| Archaeologist, born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. His lifelong study of the Middle East included expeditions to Jericho (1951), el-Jib (1956–62), and Tell es-Sa'idiyeh, Jordan (1964–7), and yielded such publications as The Ancient Near East (2 vols, 1958–1975). He ended a long teaching career in the USA and the Middle East at the University of Pennsylvania (1962–78). |
