| Lawyer and businessman, born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, USA. He studied law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar in 1845. Emigrating west in 1850, he opened (with Lloyd Tevis) a Sacramento law office that over the following decades became one of the chief financial powers of California, with particular interest in mining and agricultural development. His Kentucky horse farm produced a series of champion racers in the 1880s. |
