| biography:
| Scottish clergyman and statesman, the uncle of Cardinal David Beaton. He graduated from St Andrews in 1493, and rose rapidly to be Archbishop of Glasgow (1509) and of St Andrews (1522). He served as chancellor (1513–26) and as one of the regents during James V's minority. A zealous supporter of France and an opponent of the Reformation, he initiated the persecution of Protestants. |
