| Historical painter, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. He studied in Italy (1766–70), and in 1782 was appointed professor of painting at the Royal Academy, from which his irritable temper brought about his expulsion (1799). His most celebrated paintings are ‘Adam and Eve’ (1771) and ‘Venus Rising from the Waves’ (1772). |
