| Politician, born in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Admitted to the bar in 1856, he practised law in Bloomfield, IA, then fought in the Civil War as a Unionist. He joined the Greenback Party, serving in the US House of Representatives (1879–81, 1885–9), and ran unsuccessfully for the presidency as Greenback candidate (1880). Later prominent in the rise of the People's Party, which stood for continued wide circulation of paper money as a mechanism for economic growth, he was elected party president (1892), but failed in his bid for the presidency as a Populist candidate (1892). |
