| Astronaut, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. After attending the Naval Academy, Annapolis, he became a test pilot, and in 1963 was selected for the manned space programme. He was crew member of several historic flights: Gemini 7 (1965), Gemini 12 (1966), and Apollo 8 (1968). As commander of the unsuccessful Apollo 13 Moon mission (1970) he returned the spacecraft safely to Earth following a potentially disastrous explosion on board. He was appointed deputy director of the Johnson Space Center, Houston, in 1971. He retired from NASA in 1973 and subsequently pursued a career in business. |
