| Catholic prelate, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Ordained in 1892, he co-founded the Catholic Mission Bureau (1906) to support foreign missions and, with Father Thomas Price, won approval for a seminary for missionaries (1911). He was the first superior of the new Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America (Maryknoll), which dispatched its first missionaries in 1918. He was consecrated a bishop in 1933. |
