| biography:
| Catholic theologian and editor, born in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. A prominent theologian at church councils, he co-edited the United States Catholic Miscellany (1846–61) and edited the American Catholic Quarterly Review (from 1876). During the 1860s he was also a pastor in Wilmington, NC, where he went to assist during a yellow-fever epidemic. He was named a monsignor in 1883. |
