| Religious journalist, born in Duanesburg, New York, USA. An arch-conservative Catholic convert and anti-abolitionist, he founded the Catholic Freeman's Journal (1848) and edited it thereafter. In 1861 he was imprisoned and his journal temporarily suppressed for attacks on Abraham Lincoln. |
