| Aviator, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. A consultant engineer by profession, he was commissioned into the RAF (1923), and won fame for his record flight, Australia–England (1931) in 8 days 19 hours and 28 minutes. In 1932 he married Amy Johnson (divorced, 1938). He made the first solo E–W crossing of the N Atlantic (1932), and in February 1933 the first England–South America flight. With his wife, he made the first flight across the Atlantic to the USA (1933), and the first flight to India (1934). |
