| Archaeologist, born in Water Valley, Mississippi, USA. He was curator of North American archaeology at the American Museum of Natural History (1947–63). A specialist in prehistoric culture of the Americas, he did fieldwork in Alaska, the lower Mississippi Valley, and the Andes, and pioneered the seriation method of dating artifacts. |
