| Physical educationist, born in Almonte, Ontario, SE Canada. He was originator of the game of basketball in 1891 at the YMCA college in Springfield, MA. The game was designed to bridge the gap between the baseball and American football season. He studied at McGill University, taught at the YMCA, Denver, CO (1895–8), and the University of Kansas (1898–1937), and attended the Berlin Olympics of 1936, at which basketball was elevated to the status of an Olympic sport. |
