| biography:
| Persian lyric poet and mystic, born in Balkh, modern Afghanistan. He settled at Iconium (Konya) in 1226 and founded a sect who, after his death, were known in the West as the Whirling Dervishes. He wrote a great deal of lyrical poetry, including a long epic on Sufi mystical doctrine. |
