| Poet, born in Oudshoorn, N Netherlands. He studied law, and worked as a civil servant, journalist, and a clerk of the court. His poems, written in a style based on the classicist tradition, expressed a romantic longing, which to him was not dissatisfaction, but a force that made life bearable.
