| biography:
| Painter, born in Antwerp, N Belgium. He became a member of an Antwerp guild in 1616 and from 1630 came under the influence of Rubens, who obtained for him the patronage of the kings of Spain and Sweden. He painted several altarpieces, and became known for his scenes of merry peasant life, such as ‘The King Drinks’ (1638, Brussels). After Rubens' death he was considered the greatest painter in Antwerp. |
