| Christian Democratic politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the leader of Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA). He studied law and foreign affairs, then joined the Dutch Foreign Service in 1976 as a diplomat, first in Accra and 1978–80 in Brussels as a permanent NATO representative. Private secretary to foreign minister Hans van den Broek 1980–6, he entered parliament (CDA) in 1986, becoming party leader in 1997. |
