| biography:
| Writer, theologian, and rhetorician, born in Ehingen by Ulm, S Germany. His Jesuit dramas strongly influenced Baroque theatre. His works, often concerned with the conflict between reality and appearance, are rendered colourful and dynamic by the alternation of comic and solemn scenes; sensuous joie de vivre cloaks a latent otherworldly seriousness. The tragedy Cenodoxus (1602), his best-known work, is concerned, like the Faust legend, with futile human striving for earthly well-being. Other writings include the comedies Macarius (1613) and Josephus (1615), and epigrams and songs. |
