| Mughal emperor of India, born in Umarkot, near Hyderabad, Sind province, present day S Pakistan. He succeeded his father, Humayun, in 1556, and assumed power in 1560. The early years of his reign were marred by civil war and rebellion, but after triumphing over his enemies within the empire he turned to foreign conquest, extending his control to the whole of N India. He reformed the tax system, promoted commerce, encouraged science, literature, and the arts, and abolished slavery. Although brought up a Muslim, he pursued a tolerant and eclectic religious policy. |
