| Mathematician, born in Versailles, NC France. He studied in Paris, became lecturer at Bordeaux (1893–7) and the Sorbonne (1897–1909), and was then professor at the Collège de France and the Ecole Polytechnique until his retirement in 1937. He was a leading figure in French mathematics throughout his career, working in complex function theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. In 1896 he and the Belgian mathematician, Charles Jean de la Vallée Poussin independently proved the definitive form of the prime-number theorem. |
