| Poet, dramatist, and doctor, born in Clermont-en-Beauvais, S France. He studied medicine at the University of Paris. Author of the first original French plays to observe the forms of classical tragedies and comedies, he also wrote comedies based on classical examples, but transposed to contemporary Paris. These were published in Grévin's Théâtre (1561) with his La Mort de César, modelled on Seneca. He also wrote sonnets and was a friend of Pierre de Ronsard. A Protestant, he was forced to flee France in 1560 and became doctor and adviser to the Duchess of Savoy, and wrote on poisons and antidotes. He died in Turin. |
