| Classical architect, engineer, and town planner, born in Paris, France. He went to Italy with Robert de Cotte (1689), was elected to the Académie (1699), and succeeded de Cotte as chief architect to the king (1734). He designed many town houses in Paris, including the Hôtel Biron. In the provinces he designed the Hôtel de Ville at Rennes, the Place Royale at Bordeaux, the facade of La Rochelle Cathedral, and the bishop's palace at Blois. He also built bridges. During his career he worked with Le Pautre, Jean Aubert, and his son Jacques-Ange Gabriel. |
