biography: Mathematician, born in Geneva, SW Switzerland. A tutor in Paris, he was elected to the Académie in 1836, and became professor of mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1838. He discovered the theorem named after him concerning the location of the roots of a polynomial equation. He also did important work on linear differential equations. In 1826 he measured the velocity of sound in water by means of a bell submerged in L Geneva.
