| Musicologist and composer, born in Paris, France. From a musical family, his father was a violinist and founder of the Chailley Quartet, and his mother was a pianist. Jacques studied under Büsser, Boulanger, and Monteux, produced his thesis on St-Martial de Limoges, and became a teacher at the Schola Cantorum and director of the Institut de Musicologie at the Sorbonne. He wrote many works on the history of music (ideas, forms, terminology). His compositions include religious vocal music, melodies based on poems by Villon and Supervielle, stage music (for Aeschylus), a ballet (La Dame à la Licorne), and symphonic works such as La Tentation de St Antoine. |
