| biography:
| Archaeologist, born in Rethel, NE France. From 1837 at Moulin-Quignon in the Somme valley he discovered flint hand axes in association with the bones of extinct animals, from which he drew conclusions about the great antiquity of the human race. His views were at first greeted with incredulity, but came to be upheld 20 years later. |
