| biography:
| Painter, born in Paris, France. He worked in Italy (1624–8) and was inspired by the Venetian school, in particular by Veronese. A leading figure in French painting in the 1630s, his versions of ‘Charity’ (1637), depicted as a young woman with two or three children, demonstrate a style and technique which were nearer to the 18th-c. |
