| biography:
| Portrait painter, born in Douai, N France. He studied in Amsterdam and was influenced by Dutch naturalism, and particularly by Rembrandt. Appointed painter to the Royal family and of the aristocracy, his works include ‘Mehemid Effendi, Ambassador to the Porte’ (Versailles) and ‘Mirabeau’ (Louvre). Other portraits can be seen in Amsterdam and The Hague. He became a friend of Chardin, whose portrait of Aved hangs in the Louvre. |
