| biography:
| Humanist and prelate, born in Melun, NC France. A private tutor in noble families and in those of the future Charles IX and Henry III, he became a member of the entourage of Marguerite de Navarre who obtained for him the chair of Latin and Greek at the University of Bourges. He was commissioned by Francis I to translate the Parallel Lives of Plutarch (1542), which was the basis of Sir Thomas North's translation into English, and of some of Shakespeare's history plays. He held numerous official posts including the bishopric of Auxerre, and was sent on a mission to the Council of Trent, publishing Voyage en Italie in 1551. The quality of his French had a considerable influence on literature. |
