| biography:
| French general and war-time hero, born in Belloy-Saint-Leonard, France. He trained at St Cyr (1924), and in World War 2 served in France (1939–40). Captured twice during the German invasion, he escaped on both occasions, and joined the Free French forces under Charles de Gaulle in England. He became military commander in French Equatorial Africa, and led a force across the desert to join the British 8th Army in 1942. He commanded the French 2nd Armoured Division in Normandy, and liberated Paris in 1944. |
