He studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne (1937), and began a career in anthropology, becoming assistant director of the Musée d'Homme in Paris (1937–9). He turned to politics, and during World War 2 joined the Free French government, later holding a number of posts, including Governor-General of Algeria (1955). Leader of the Gaullist group in the National Assembly (1956–8), he was instrumental in the return to power of General de Gaulle, but later broke with him over the question of Algerian independence.
