| biography:
| Dutch ruler, born in Arras, N France, the eldest son of Antony of Burgundy and Johanna de Saint Pol. He married Jacqueline of Bavaria in 1418, but she left him after two years, as he did not defend her interest in Holland and Zeeland against her uncle John of Bavaria. In subsequent conflicts he gathered the towns on his side by granting the ‘New Regiment’ in 1422, which increased the power of the States. He gained Hainault, and was recognized as count in Holland and Zeeland, but was unable to control them and had to appoint Philip the Good as ‘steward’, marking the beginning of Burgundian rule in The Netherlands. He founded the first university in the Low Countries at Louvain in 1425. |
