| Jansenist nun, born in Paris, France, the sister of Antoine Arnauld. A Benedictine novice at age eight, she was made Abbess of Port-Royal at the age of 11. She ran the convent with discipline and reformed it, influenced by St Cyran. Her sister Agnes (1593–1671) succeeded her as Abbess in 1630. Mère Angélique's written works include Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de Port-Royal (1642–4) and Image de la religieuse parfaite et imparfaite (1665). |
