| Founder of genre painting in Europe, born in Bassano, Venice, NE Italy. His best paintings are of peasant life and biblical scenes, and include the altarpiece of the Nativity at Bassano, ‘Calvary’ (c.1538, Cambridge), and ‘Pastoral’ (c.1565–70, Lugano). His four sons were also painters. |
