| biography:
| Dutch admiral, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He sailed with Willem Barentz in search of the NE passage and brought his third expedition back after Barentz' death. He later went with Jacob van Neck to Bantam (West Java) and after Van Neck's return he made trade agreements in Ternate, Amboina, and Banda. On his second voyage to the east (1601), by now as admiral, he captured a rich Portuguese carack in the Straits of Malacca. This had political repercussions which in 1604 led Hugo Grotius to write De jure praedae, a treatise on prize rights. He was appointed by Oldenbarnevelt to command the navy, and was killed in the victory over the Spanish, known as the Battle of Gibraltar. |
