| Architect, born in Purmerend, The Netherlands. He studied at the Delft Technical University, collaborated with Mondrian and others in launching the review De Stijl, and became a pioneer of the modern architectural style based on simplified forms and pure planes. Appointed city architect at Rotterdam in 1918, he designed a number of striking buildings, including municipal housing blocks such as the Kiefhoek Estate in Amsterdam (1925–7). |
