| biography:
| Dutch politician and schoolteacher, born in Vlaardingen, W Netherlands. He joined the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) in 1918, and became chairman of several youth organizations (Arbeiders Jeugd Centrale and Socialistische Jeugd Internationale) and of the SDAP in 1934. He was a member of the Upper House during 1935–46 (imprisoned by the Germans in Sachsenhausen concentration camp from 1943) and became chairman of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in 1945. In 1946 he resigned his appointments when a press campaign against him claimed that he had once tried to join the National Front. He sat in the Upper House during 1946–54. |
