| biography:
| Chemist, a founder of physical chemistry and stereochemistry, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at Leyden, and became professor of chemistry at Amsterdam (1877), Leipzig (1887), and Berlin (1895). He postulated the asymmetrical nature of bonds formed with carbon atoms, was the first to apply thermodynamics to chemical reactions, discovered that osmotic pressure varies directly with the absolute temperature, and investigated the formation of double salts. He was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1901. |
