| Essayist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. From 1822 he was librarian of the Leiden University library. His essays and lectures on Dutch literature had a big influence on the editors of the magazine De Gids, Bakhuizen van den Brink, and Potgieter. Most famous is his Gesprek op den Drachenfels (1835, Discussion on Mount Drachenfels), in which the difference between classicism and Romanticism is discussed. |
