| Dutch adventurer, born in Enkhuizen, W Netherlands. At the age of 16 he went out to the East as a sailor and joined the civilian service of the VOC (United East India Company) in Coromandel, where he became governor and director in 1738. Four years later he went to Batavia, where he became director-general of commerce, and from 1750–61 as governor-general supported the VOC's monopoly. He also established peace in Bantam and in Mataram, which was split into Jogja and Solo, but he was defeated in his attempts to establish a post in Bengal in 1759. He had a Malaysian translation printed of the Bible at his own expense. |
