| biography:
| Flemish writer, born in Londerzeel, C Belgium. He worked as an editor for various magazines including Forum, and was a library inspector (1940–63). He aimed to open new roads for Flemish and Catholic literature, but was misunderstood by some of his readers and the Catholic Church. Bitter and disappointed about the harsh reaction to his psychological novels, he left the Catholic Church in 1940. In his novels, he writes in a straightforward, honest language that is related to the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. In addition to his versatile novels, he wrote essays, short stories, children's stories, poetry, drama, and texts for television and radio. He received the Grote Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren in 1968. |
