| biography:
| Poet, born in Smilde, N Netherlands. Brother to the writer Carry van Bruggen, he worked as a teacher and journalist. Alienated from his Jewish roots and full of socialist ideas, he wrote naturalist poems, but later returned to the Jewish faith and became a Zionist, teaching in Jerusalem. His Kwatrijnen (1924) reflect this period in Jerusalem, his dual personality, and his disappointment with Zionism. He was murdered when he was about to return to Europe. |
