| Dutch statesman, Pensionary of Haarlem (1730–44), and Grand Pensionary of Holland (1746–9). He was anti-Orange, a supporter of ‘the true freedom’, and acquired so much authority as a lawyer and administrator that he was made stadtholder after the dismissal of William IV in 1747. The prince, helped by William Bentinck and John Sandwich the English ambassador, managed to remove him in 1749. |
