| US soldier, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He trained at West Point (1861) and saw combat during the Civil War. He served on the frontier for nearly 30 years, and commanded the 1st Infantry Division in the storming of San Juan Hill outside Santiago, Cuba (Jul 1898). |
