| biography:
| One of the heroes of the early days of the revolt in The Netherlands, born in Ghent. He took part in the capture of Brielle, and was at Enkhuizen with Lumey, capturing Medemblik and Hoorn. The Prince of Orange made him governor of Medemblik and later commandant at Alkmaar. He was a model of courage and strength during the siege of Alkmaar by the Spanish under Don Frederick (1573), defending it successfully, and was later made governor of the town. |
