| Dutch Social Democratic politician and lawyer, born in Willemstad, N Brabant, SW Netherlands. From 1930 he practised law in Dordrecht. He escaped to London in 1943 and became minister in the Dutch government in exile. In 1945–62 he was MP for Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) and party leader (1951–62). He served as a member of the Upper House (1963–70), of the Council of State (from 1970), and of the European Parliament and the Benelux Council. In 1949–67 he was also chairman of VARA (Vereniging van Arbeiders-Radio-Amateurs), the socialist broadcasting organization. |
