| Biblical character, the third son of Jacob by his wife Leah. It is debated whether his descendants ever formed one of the 12 tribes of Israel descended from Jacob's sons. Although they were called a tribe, no territory was apparently allocated to them (Josh 13.14), and they seem to have been a kind of priestly class. Moses is later depicted as a descendant of Levi. |
