| Baseball player, born in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, USA. He began an athletic career at Arizona State University, but turned to baseball. He joined the Kansas City (later Oakland) Athletics (1968–75), establishing himself as a versatile player, with exceptional skill as a hitter. He transferred to the Baltimore Orioles in 1976, then signed for the New York Yankees, where he became renowned for brashness and brilliance by turns, matching Babe Ruth with three home runs in a 1977 World Series game. In 1982 he joined the California Angels, and retired after the 1987 season with 563 home runs. In his later career he also worked as a sports commentator. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993. |
